Introductory Email

Dear Professor Blackstone,

Thank you for taking the time to read my email. My name is Cephas and I am writing this email to introduce myself in the hope of you getting to know me better. I am currently a first-year student studying mechanical engineering at Singapore institute of technology. I graduated from Singapore polytechnic with a diploma in aeronautical engineering in 2021.

When I was 8 years old, my father brought me to the Air Force Open House where they showcased fighter jets such as the F16 and helicopters. I remember watching the jets soar in the sky with their engines roaring, traveling at such astonishing speeds. I was intrigued and curious about how the jet works and their ability to sustain flight. Through this, I developed a curious mindset, and I wanted to learn how things work and why. I believe this curiosity, along with my determination to understand problems and their solutions, is what led me to become an engineering student today.

One of my strengths in communication lies in my active listening skills. When I am engaged in a conversation, I tend to pay attention to verbal and non-verbal cues, such as body language, facial expressions, and tone, among others. I believe that by observing these cues with my emotional intelligence, I can understand what someone is trying to say, which allows me to communicate better. I believe what makes me stand out from others is that I can resolve conflicts by empathizing with others and understanding their perspective.

On the other hand, in terms of communication weaknesses, I tend to experience anxiety whenever I am speaking to a large group of people, even though I am comfortable with speaking to smaller audiences. I tend to stutter my words and have a constant fear of losing my train of thought during a speech, which could lead to an awkward silence. Due to this, one of my goals is to enhance my capacity to engage and captivate an audience by honing my public speaking skills through this module. By achieving this goal, I believe that i will gain more confidence by being a strong public speaker, possibly opening doors to new opportunities in my future career.

My second goal is to refine my critical thinking skills, especially when it comes to evaluation. I want to improve my skill in assessing the credibility, relevance, and quality of information and arguments. By doing so, I aim to become a better critical thinker, capable of making informed judgments that will aid my decision-making process in my personal life or in my future career.

Once again, thank you for your time, and I look forward to seeing you in class.

Yours Sincerely,

Cephas Chin

  1. I find this introductory letter to be really well-structured and informative. perhaps one thing you could elaborate on is, should you managed to hit your 2 goals, how they could aid you in the future, be it your career or education. Other than that, I think you really nailed it!

  3. Dear Cephas,

Thank you for this very well crafted letter. In it you provide lots of relevant information that leads us readers to having a much better understanding of who you are. I especially like learning the details on how you developed an interest in engineering. You also delve deeply into what your communication competencies are.

Generally, your letter is well articulated. Here are a couple minor issues to resolve:

    1. the use of caps
-- I am currently a first-year student studying Mechanical Engineering at Singapore Institute of Technology. I graduated from Singapore Polytechnic with a diploma in Aeronautical Engineering in 2021. > (Do the study areas need caps?)

    2. verb tense
-- I remembered watching... > (Or do you remember now?)

I look forward to learning more about you this term.

    Cheers,

    Brad
